Episode 15: Cherub

The Nashville duo talk about fine tuning their craft together, Mexico and Jack Daniel's

Jason Huber and Jordan Kelley, the energetic duo that make up Cherub stopped in our Attic Lounge back in January. They have been a busy band, opening for bands such as Pretty Lights and touring non-stop these past couple months. They recently released their second LP Mom and Dad to great reception. Kelley's powerful falsetto sounded nothing short of perfect in the Attic and also introduced The Attic Lounge to it's first talk box solo. Cherub takes an 80's funk look at music and turns it into finely crafted songs that range from romantic to straight up party anthems. They started off with "Lyndenberries," a quiet, haunting tune that they also tried out in our auditorium. "Love You Right" was the next up, with Jason arming himself with an acoustic guitar which is a rarity for Cherub. In a long interview, Jordan and Jason talked of their love and appreciation for Nashville, and how they love surprising the people with stereotypical views of the city. The duo are roomates, and spend time writing together and separately in their home. The combination of great lyrical content and amazing riffs and beats, this duo is set to continue

Episode 14: Adam Faucett

The Arkansas songwriter quit washing dishes and had to write songs

One thing we can be sure of, we are glad Adam Faucett stopped washing dishes and starting writing songs. The Arkansas native came into The Attic Lounge last month and gave us a performance we won't soon forget. With a 'wailing' walk-up at the beginning of the session, Faucett treated us to two unreleased songs from his repetoire. His voice is strong, eerie, and his falsetto is soft and perfect. He is a Townes Van Zandt type of character, not much to say, but when he picks up the guitar it seems to all fit. The thing about Faucett is that he a truly original songwriter, some influence, but so original in how he writes and how he sings. He visits Nashville often, playing last year's Soundland and packing the house 2 weeks in a row at the East Nashville dive bar Dino's. We will be sure to keep you up to date of his whereabouts in Nashville, because he is not a show you want to miss.

Episode 13: Kenny Foster

The Missouri native talks about making it in Nashville and his alternate tunings for songwriting

You may have heard Kenny Foster in a number of places. Playing the Vegas ACM stage, or on the radio with his ode to his shaken home of Joplin, MO, "Hometown." Kenny stopped by The Attic Lounge after a tasting event we had in the auditorium. When Kenny first got to Nashville, he was one of the few who actually understands the act of sticking it out in the music industry and is here for the music and because he has to be. Kenny's session speaks a lot to the "art of making it" and is a huge insight to chasing the dream in Nashville. Kenny's hard work is paying off this year. After releasing "Hometown" to radio stations across the country, the song was also featured on "Extreme Home Makeover." Kenny stopped by and went straight into "In That Rain" with an amazing dobro solo attached to it by veteran Josh Matheny. After that, he slowed it down with "Try" a great love ballad that will be Kenny's next release. Check out his music here, and download his EP.

Episode 12:The Front Bottoms

The acoustic punk rockers play some tunes and introduce us to a melodica

The Front Bottoms, a band name which they explained was inspired by the famous speech Ben Kingsley made in the 2000 film ‘Sexy Beast’, brought their conversationalist style of acoustic-punk to The Attic Lounge along with something else we hadn’t seen up there yet, a melodica.

Hailing from New Jersey, The Front Bottoms stopped by The Attic Lounge while on the road with Kevin Devine to share with us some stories that have inspired their music and lyrics, and play a couple of songs from their most recent album. They opened the session with ‘Bathtub’, a song which front-man Brian Sella described as being lyrically inspired by real life situations, and musically inspired by The Mountain Goats (a band who are probably the closest comparison to The Front Bottoms that I can think of). They followed up this slower track with one of their dancier tunes, ‘Flashlight’, before finishing off their performances in War Memorial Auditorium, belting out the chorus of ‘Swimming Pool’ into reverb-loving oblivion, “There’s comfort at the bottom of a swimming pool.”

The Front Bottoms are out there to have a good time and by no means are trying to be anything they’re not, and this truly shows in their interview, which for me is the funniest interview we’ve filmed so far for the series.
